Lake Garda's alpine and excursionist refuges. To Mount Altissimo from Bocca di Navene. From Bocca di Navene you head north for about 700 m. along the asphalt road to the "Graziani" refuge. Here you take trail nr. 651 (10 min.). Traveling amidst beech and larch trees, you climb up the crest of the Lastè di Tòlghe overlooking the lake Garda to a marked panoramic spot at an altitude of 1,858 m. (1 hour). You proceed, passing old war posts from World War II, to the junction for Busa Brodeghera (15 min.) where you meet up with the military road that leads to the "Damiano Chiesa" refuge (30 min.).

From this spot you can easily reach the summit of Mount Altissimo, which affords a marvelous view sweeping from the Dolomiti to Lake Garda. For the return trip, take trail nr. 633, which cuts the hairpin bends of the military road, to the "Graziani" refuge and Bocca del Creer, at an altitude of 1,617 m. (1 hour). Crossing the asphalt road, you take trail nr. 653 to the place near the Tòlghe alpine farm, then you take the mule trail that ascends to Bocca di Navene (40 min.).

The "Damiano Chiesa" Alpine Refuge on Mount Altissimo

Construction of the first refuge on Mount Altissimo (2,060 m) began in 1888 through an initiative of several S.A.T. members from Rovereto and Brentonico. The building was inaugurated on June 6, 1892 and provided hospitality to a growing number of mountain climbers and hikers. Expanded in 1905, it became a base for Italian troops during World War I, but was never damaged. It was reopened in 1919 and named after Trentino patriot Damiano Chiesa.
Entrusted to the S.A.T. of Rovereto since the fifties, it was subsequently transferred to the Brentonico chapter and then, in 1965, it was transferred to the Mori chapter, which supervised the recent remodeling and enlarging project (1995).

A panoramic point named after Barons Argia and Ugo Salvotti was inaugurated in 1988 near the refuge and also indicates the surrounding peaks.
There are 20 beds, and a winter shelter with six beds.

"Generale Graziani" Refuge

At Bocca del Creer, at an altitude of 1,620 m., on the northeastern side of Mount Baldo and just 5 km from San Valentino, it has 20 beds and is open from May to October. Many excursions are available: to Mount Altissimo of Nago and to the "Damiano Chiesa" alpine refuge, to the "Corna Piana Natural Reserve", to the Bocca di Navene and to Bocca Tratto Spino.

The obligatory opening period of S.A.T. refuges is from June 20 to September 20. Refuges can also be open in other periods of the year, especially on weekends and in the spring.

Useful Advice


• Mountain hiking or trekking is an adventure and an experience that brings you in contact with the mountains and nature. Since some itineraries can be difficult for an amateur or untrained excursionist or mountain climber, caution is advised.

Clothing:

• Clothing must not be exaggerated and always suitable for the season, taking into account the type of excursion, altitude and weather, which can change quickly in the mountains. Bring in your backpack sunglasses, a hat, a change of clothing, waterproof jacket with hood (the change of clothing, be it heavy or light, should depend upon the season underway).

Equipment:

• Besides wearing the right shoes (mountain or trekking boots), bring a water bottle or another beverage, a first aid emergency kit, maps, and a Swiss Army knife.

Safety:

• Always notify someone of your excursion, and if you are not accompanied by family members or friends, speak with the staff at the reception desk in your residence or hotel, and let them know of your plans. Bringing a mobile phone with you during the excursion is very helpful and might come in handy.

These measures might seem extreme, but there are many potential dangers in the mountains, and you want to avoid them. In fact, it is better to be safe than sorry!
