Sailing and the lake Garda

People have been sailing on Lake Garda since the dawn of humanity. Today sailing has become a sport: there are more then fifty yacht clubs on Lake Garda that have spawned undeniably talented skippers, even of Olympic caliber. The lake climate creates different types of wind currents: a light breeze in the southern part, cooler winds in the middle of the lake from Gargnano to Malcesine, and a stiff wind to the north from Torbole to Riva del Garda.

Each town has its own yachting club, and sailing courses are available in summer or winter. Kids of any age can try their hand at what could be called the national sport of Lake Garda. From June to September, the lake waters are covered by numerous sails of all types. The sailing competitions of Lake Garda, some quite old and others more recent, are renowned.
The most famous is the Centomiglia, which has existed for fifty years; Intervela is a similar race. Each town on the lake organizes internationally recognized regattas and events in the summertime. From the Gulf of Salò, one can admire the sails of more technical classes, which compete in the month of August to the joy of tourists.

On the water facing Torbole, international crews compete in races sponsored by the Province of Trento, where crafts from the Etchelles to eighteen-footers skim over the waves. But there is also a more leisurely type of sailing, setting out in the morning without a precise destination and heading to the middle of Italy's largest lake. At its center there is only sun and wind. The silence is only interrupted by the sound of the waves lapping up against the boat.
Enjoying the sun and breeze, you leave the rest of the world behind and get in touch with the sound of nature. After this bath of light, you can dock in one of the many small ports and enjoy the simple, delicious local cuisine.
