Peschiera del Garda: The Palio delle Mura on August 22th, 2010

Palio delle Mura is an ancient Veneto-style rowing contest that uses the typical Garda boats. The boats compete to win the Palio by rowing from Porto Cappuccini to the Canale di Mezzo along the canals of the "Fortress" that line the ancient walls of Peschiera del Garda.

This very important summer event on the lake Garda combines folklore, sports, history, and entertainment in a beautiful natural setting with stunning architecture. The fascinating town of Peschiera del Garda, in fact, is surrounded by 16th century walls with five tall towers. Fans and visitors can enjoy this fascinating ancient race and watch the crews from the panoramic bridges or the lakefront.
At 4:15 p.m., after the procession of flag-bearers and costumed representatives of the crews in the historic town center of Peschiera del Garda, the crews and boats are presented and given a blessing.

The actual race starts 15 minutes later. At 4:30 p.m., about twenty traditional boats (Garda gondolas with two rowers who row while standing) compete from Porto Cappuccini to the finish line in Canale di Mezzo.
Afterwards, the winners will receive the Palio and greet the public during an awards ceremony. It will be a day full of charm and excitement.
