Walking, boating and cycling through the peaceful Mincio Natural Park. What is most striking about Mantua is the delightful sight of the three adjoining lakes formed where the River Mincio widens. The river flows through an area of great naturalistic, historic, devotional and cultural interest. Several cycle tracks link up the town centre with the countryside. One of these tracks, called Cammin di Ronda (the ancient patrol route), spreads out along the lake promenade; a second one goes from the lakes to Peschiera del Garda along the River Mincio. A third route takes you straight to the wood called Bosco Fontana and the park called Parco delle Bertone, and towards Valeggio.
Mantua is the starting point for even numerous cycle tracks throughout the provinces of Verona and Brescia. They lead you along the morainic hills of Lake Garda, passing through interesting towns Custoza, Goito, San Martino and Solferino dated back to the Risorgimento. Some of the most popular destinations are the sanctuary Madonna delle Grazie and the abbey of San Benedetto Po. These charming natural places can be visited on foot, by bicycle and by canoe, rowing boat or by motorboat. There are extensive marshes and cane-brakes, protected wildlife species, including swans, ducks, herons and egrets, and rich aquatic vegetation including white waterlilies and lotus flowers. Anyone wishing to stop there for a snack or a more leisurely lunch can try one of the numerous farmhouses, restaurants, trattorias and hotels along the route, which all serve local specialities and good wines.
Sightseeing boat trips start from the landing stage along the promenade and boats can be hired for special occasions such as business meetings, wedding parties and school outings. Meals and music concerts can also be arranged on board to enhance the trip along the beautiful river course.
