Bezzecca, a resort town at the mouth of Valle di Concei [Concei Valley], owes its popularity to Garibaldi and World War I. Val di Ledro and Bezzecca, especially, were the site of battles between Garibaldi’s troops and the Austrian army during the Third War of Independence in 1866. Garibaldi’s soldiers were victorious. When news of the Armistice between Italy and Austria arrived on August 9 and General La Marmora issued the order to withdraw from the Trentino Region, Giuseppe Garibaldi uttered his famous phrase, “I obey” in the square of Bezzecca.
