This rowing race takes place every year on the second Sunday of May in Toscolano Maderno on Lake Garda. The Gardalonga is a marathon rowing event for any type of boat. Many athletes participate with different types of boats, ranging from the bissa (a typical local boat) and Garda gondola to canoes, gigs, and whalers. There are even strange and spectacular crafts such as the dragon boat (12 meters long with a dragon head and tail, powered by 20 rowers and drummer and steersman) and all sorts of prototypes.
The race begins at 10:30 a.m. The Gardalonga short route only sails in the Salò Gulf. The boats set sail from the Maderno Gulf, then they sail along the coast to the ports of Gardone Riviera and Salò, then they point their bow eat to Portese, arriving to Garda Island (the unique island with its colorful, lush greenery). Circumnavigating the Garda Island, they return to Maderno, backtracking to Portese, Salò, Gardone Riviera, and Maderno.
The Gardacorta route is entirely in the Salò Gulf: it starts out from the Maderno Gulf, sails along the coast, reaches the ports of Gardone Riviera and Salò, and turns back to return to Maderno.
