Eighteenth Century: Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona from November 26th 2011 to April 9th 2012

Tiepolo, Cignaroli and Rotari. The nobility of Veronese art during the Enlightenment. The exhibit in Verona presents more than 100 paintings and about 40 other works (sketches, prints, and documents) from prestigious Italian and foreign museums that shed light on the richness of art during the Enlightenment and the network of prestigious patrons who demanded Veronese works.

The project focuses on Pietro Antonio Rotari (1707-1762) and Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770), famous classic artists who, under the patronage of Scipione Maffei, coherently represented the art of that century. The exhibit also presents an image that the city acquired through the vision of landscape artists (especially Bernardo Bellotto) and works produced for Verona by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, with the reconstruction of the ceiling painted by Giambattista for Palazzo Canossa, which was partially destroyed during World War II.

The exhibit is closely linked to the exhibition of the Archeological Museum dedicated to the excavations made in the 18th century by Jacopo Musselli, and an itinerary at the Gallery of Modern Art on the 18th century phase of Palazzo Forti. The exhibit will also be integrated with tours of the churches, palazzos, and patrician villas of Verona and surrounding areas.
