Tignale was the center of a Roman rural district, which later became a Christian parish that included Valvestino and Campione di Tremosine. In the 10th century it was owned by the Benedictine Monastery of Leno. It subsequently belonged to the Cathedral of Brescia, the bishop of Trento, the Della Scala family (who rebuilt the castle), and the Visconti family. In August 1426 Tignale handed over the fortress to the Venetians, gaining the right to autonomously govern the area with its own laws, almost like a separate region. On August 17, 1617 in Fornaci Valley, a well-aimed harquebus ended the days of bandit Zuan Zanone, known as "Zanzanù", who had terrorized the entire Garda Riviera. With the arrival of Napoleon's troops, the destiny of the town followed that of the others on Lake Garda in the region of Brescia until the onset of World War I, when the border of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire near Magasa and Valvestino was eliminated.
Many festivals are celebrated throughout the year in the area of Tignale. St. Valentine is the patron saint of the town of Aer. Thus, on February 14, a special ceremony is held and salt for the animals is blessed. Piovere celebrates Saint Mark, its patron saint, on April 25 with the solemn procession that winds through the streets. A festival is held in Olzano on Saint Lorenzo's Day on August 10. The Assumption on August 15 is celebrated in Gardola. On the Sunday preceding August 15, the effigy of the Madonna of Montecastello is carried in procession through the parish streets to the church. On August 16, Saint Rocco's Day, Oldesio stages a festival and a lively donkey race. The Immaculate Conception on December 8 is celebrated in Prabione. The procession held on September 7, the eve of the nativity of the Madonna, is quite a popular event. On that occasion, the statue of the Madonna is carried from the church of Gardola to the Sanctuary of Montecastello.
Piemp Peak (1,208 m) can be reached from Gardola on foot along two walking trails, and by mountain bike or car along five kilometers of asphalt road. Here the members of the Tignale chapter of A.N.A. (National Alpine Association) have built a small, picturesque refuge and chapel. The refuge, the departure point for many walks and hikes in the hinterland, is always open and at the complete disposal of excursionists.
It may seem impossible to climb from "Pra de la fam" (65 m) to Oldesio (450 m), but a path that was recently repaired by the Comunità Montana passes through the valley of the Baès stream and along the steep rocky slopes, leading to terraced olive groves beyond the provincial road and right to the foot of Oldesio. Starting out from the entrance under the portico of the building near the lemon grove on the lake garda and climbing the short flight of stairs, it takes about an hour to reach the top and enjoy the breathtaking view to Sirmione, Peschiera del Garda and beyond.
