The history of Moniga del GardaMoniga Curiosity History

Moniga del Garda preserves the notable remains of a lake settlement of the people of Polada that dates back to the Early Bronze Age (1800-2000 B.C.). The village was first mentioned in a document of Charlemagne from 879. Moniga became a fiefdom of Ugone da Poncarale in the second half of the 12th century, and in 1196 Arrigo VI bequeathed it to the monks of Leno Abbey. Between 1426 and 1797 Moniga on lake Garda and the Valtenesi area were ruled by the Venetian Republic.
When the provisional government of Brescia was established, they were added to the Canton of the Hills, with Lonato as the administrative center. After the Congress of Vienna Moniga was annexed to Austria, to which it belonged until 1859. Between 1928 and 1947, the town became part of the Municipality of Padenghe.

Crossed twice by the main road, it runs along the bottom of Mount Monache to Solarolo, passing vineyards, olive groves and farms on the way. Afterwards, you can head towards the old district of Moniga del Garda, passing the castle and parish church and returning to the starting point. The 3.7 km route is marked with the number 7 and is called "Il cigno" (The swan).

It is also called S. Michele Church after the locality in which it is found, near the cemetery. With a single nave and rustic facade, it is one of the most recent Romanesque churches of the Valtenesi area and probably dates back to the second half of the 16th century. The three windows and the pronaos were probably built in the last century.
