June 21st: summer begins on a high note

The municipalities of Arco and Ledro are preparing to welcome the European Music Festival on June 21, 2010, which will be the star of the first day of summer in 120 nations worldwide, from Argentina to Zambia and especially in European countries. Across the continents, the notes of countless performers that will animate the most famous, crowded squares and the most hidden streets in cities such as Barcelona, London, Paris, but also in Ramallah or Sarajevo will stop in the historic town center of Arco and the Ledro village of Bezzecca to welcome summer in a spirit of multicultural vivacity.

The 2009 Festival pacifically invaded the city of Arco and the hamlets of Ledro: 450 musicians and dancers captivated the locals and tourists for 24 hours of music. The long, spontaneous, and colorful spectacle of artistic and cultural exchanges makes this event a precious opportunity for encounters and relations amidst sounds, moods, and languages.

From the stages and streets, narrow lanes and courtyards, jazz, reggae, rock and African percussions awakened the interest and curious enthusiasm of the large audience, approximately 35,000 people during the two-day event, who actively participated in the festival as an essential co-star.

The Music Festival was launched in 1982 in France through a far-sighted project of Culture Minister Jack Lang who welcomed and implemented an idea of Joel Cohen, a U.S. musician who worked for Radio France in the late eighties. The original idea intended to celebrate the "Saturnales de la Musique" during the two solstice days: June 21 and December 21. The choice of date coincides with the longest day of the year that, since ancient days, has been a symbol of celebrations devoted to the sacredness of nature, from the Litha of the Neo-Pagans to the Christian birth of St. John the Baptist.

The European Music Festival invites everyone to participate in the next edition - June 21, 2010 - in Arco and Bezzecca (Ledro) for a day entirely devoted to music in the spirit that distinguishes it: a free and spontaneous sharing of time, music, culture, and color.
